Prospective Owner Pre-Purchase Questionnaire
NOTE: If you need additional room to answer any of these questions, feel free to answer your questions on a separate sheet of paper appended to or emailed/faxed with this questionnaire.
1) Why do you want to own a German Shepherd Dog? What do you intend as the primary role
of a German Shepherd puppy or dog in your household? For example, will the pup/dog be primarily
a personal companion, family companion, home guard dog, playmate for the children, personal
protection dog, outdoor watchdog, sport competition dog, etc?
2) What are the breed characteristics that you like most about this
breed? In other words, what
factors will be most important to you in your selection of a puppy? For example: Color, size, gender,
markings, bloodlines, etc. Please describe.
3) Have you owned a German Shepherd Dog before? If so, how long did you have the dog(s)?
Where is/are the dog(s) now? If the dog(s) passed away,
of what cause(s)?
4) Do you want a male or a female German Shepherd Dog? What is the reason for your preference,
if
you have one?
5) Have you owned other breeds of dogs before? If so, what breed(s), for how long did you own
each dog,
and what became of each of these dogs?
6) Have you ever had to
euthanize an animal? Yes or no?
If yes, what were the circumstances?
If you have never had to euthanize an animal, could you
do so if advised to by a veterinarian?
Yes or no?
7) Do you plan on spaying or neutering your dog? Do you plan on breeding your dog in the future?
For both questions please explain why
or why not.
8) How much time a day do you have to spend with your
dog? What type of a job do you have,
and how much time are you required to spend away from home? Do you have any
flexibility
in your life or work which would afford your puppy or dog extra attention,
such as a stay at home
spouse, the ability to define your own work hours, work from home or bring
your dog/pup to work?
If so, please describe.
9) Describe your potential dog/puppy's living accommodations. Will the dog live inside or outside?
Please describe the yard, kennel and any other areas where the dog will have access to and/or live.
For example, grass yard, concrete run, gravel run, covered or uncovered run, fenced, pool, large
(wooded
or unwooded) acreage, etc. In addition, do you own or rent your home? How long have
you lived at your
current address? Do you have neighbors with animals or livestock? If so, how
are these
animals contained? Please answer each question individually and as specifically as possible.
10) How do you discipline your dog/puppy? How do you plan on helping your puppy/dog adjust
to its new home. What manners will be required of the puppy/dog for it to become an acceptable
member of your household? For example: Learn quickly to not chase your cat, know and not stray
from
your property boundaries, understand that barking at guests at the door is unacceptable, etc.
In other words, what behaviors do you find either necessary or intolerable in your dog, if any?
Please address each sub-question with as much detail as possible.
11) Do you plan on obedience training your dog? If so, have you researched potential trainers
and/or dog
schools, or will you train your pup/dog yourself? If you plan on training your pup/dog
yourself, what training methods do you use and what resources do you have for training?
For example: training books you have read, prior training experience(s), etc. Please list.
12)Are you planning on participating with your dog in any type of dog sport, work or activity?
